John S. Toll Science Center

Under the leadership of scientist and educator John S. Toll, Washington College undertook its most ambitious fundraising campaign in its history, raising $103.4 million dollars for scholarships, academic innovations, faculty support and facilities. The final project of the Campaign for Washington's College is the recently completed construction of the new Science Center that bears his name and the renovation of the existing Dunning/Decker Complex now underway.
The John Toll Science Center Complex is comprised of a three story addition housing the departments of Biology and Chemistry as well as a state-of the art 90-seat multi-media classroom. The Dunning-Decker wing will receive extensive renovations and be joined to the new wing via a three story atrium that shall serve as a meeting space for students and faculty as well as a site for all-campus social events.
A centerpiece of the project is a three-story atrium that will join the existing Dunning-Decker wing to the newly constructed wing of the center. The ground floor of the atrium is lounge area where students and faculty may congregate to socialize, receptions can be held for visiting speakers and scientific poster sessions offered for the campus community.
The psychology department will occupy the entire ground level of the Dunning-Decker wing of the science center, including the northern entrance to the atrium. Faculty offices will be located at the eastern end of the building, around a central student-faculty lounge. Laboratories facilities on the ground floor include:
- Social Psychology Laboratory
- Sensation and Perception Laboratory
- EEG and Eye-movement Laboratory
- Health Psychology Laboratory
- Psychological Testing and Behavioral
- Assessment Laboratory
In addition to these laboratories a 40 seat computer classroom is located at the west end of the wing.
The new 45,000-square-foot Biology and Chemistry wing will double the size of the College's science teaching and research complex. Renovations to the existing Dunning-Decker Science Complex will be finished after the the new science center wing is occupied, completing the total modernization of the College's science facilities.
